Astrological overview for August 2020 – steady, disciplined creativity
The Astrology for this month is largely one of burgeoning frustration with Mars in Aries sneaking up to square Saturn in Capricorn. However, the energy is a little lighter and brighter with the Sun now in his home sign of regal Leo. This placement offers a more creative, playful, optimistic, confident and even dramatic energy. The Sun trines action-oriented Mars in his feisty home sign of Aries at 24 degrees on the 17th, where asserting, expressing and driving your heartfelt creative flair is a way of focusing this inspirational energy. Take action! We have our goal-oriented Leo Sun also conjunct communicative Mercury on the 17/18th (known as cazimi), so put thought into what you identify with and would like to create in your world.
The Sun in Leo however squares change-agent Uranus in resistant Taurus at 10 degrees at the top of the month, on the 2nd/3rd, where Uranus, planet of surprise, shock and awe is also slowing down, eventually stationing retrograde on the 15th of the month at 10 degrees, further intensifying his ‘wake up call’ energy.
Early in the month we also have the Full Moon in Aquarius on the 3rd/4th at 11 degrees, tensely and exactly squaring sudden, disruptive, exciting, ‘expect the unexpected’ planet Uranus in Taurus. If we need to make changes, even revolutionary changes in our lives, they will be brought to light and made manifest; any ‘Fixed-hooved’ Taurean stubbornness will be dug out, or even blasted out, of the rut. No more going around in the same old groove. The theme of rude or liberating awakenings, or even accidents is therefore highlighted at the beginning of August.
At the same time, Mars in Aries at 19 degrees of Aries makes his exact square with Jupiter at 19 degrees of Capricorn, so try not to go ‘over the top’ or to excess in your meaningful endeavours. Mercury in Cancer also opposes Saturn in Capricorn at 27 degrees where the message may be limited or restricted or not able to get out easily.
Mercury then moves into Leo on the 4th/5th, finally leaving emotional Watery Cancer after around 2 months (late May/early June), and where it had recently been retrograde. Mercury now isn’t in hard aspect with the triple conjunction (opposite Jupiter/Saturn/Pluto in Capricorn) or square Mars in Aries. Phew. Thoughts and communication generally may be more optimistic and lighter here in sunny Leo.
Relatable Venus however moves into Watery Cardinal sign Cancer on the 7th/8th, finally leaving flirty Airy Gemini after around 3-4 months, since early April, and where she had recently been retrograde, stationing direct on 26 July. We are closer to locking down again so we won’t be socialising and gabbing as much out in the world, but rather feeling like being more at home emotionally and physically, enjoying feeling nurtured, safe and secure there.
The New Moon is in Leo on the 18th at 26 degrees of the sign. Luckily there are no difficult aspects to this lunation, and the ruler is the Sun, so set your new intention on what you need to start in terms of a path with a heart, your goals and creative endeavours, or with children. What would make you proud?
Mercury then moves from showy Leo into analytical, Earthy Virgo on the 19th in one of its home signs, while the Sun moves into Virgo on the 23rd. Time to get the details sorted – discern “the wheat from the chaff,” be discriminating and do some practical thinking, although Mercury will later oppose imaginative and nebulous Neptune at the end of the month 30th/31st, clouding thinking and expression, so things may get misinterpreted or lost in translation.
Here comes that Warrior Mars again:
Mars in Aries is in a Cardinal sign. He was previously in fellow Cardinal sign Capricorn back in March, coinciding with the Coronavirus ramping up and subsequent lockdowns. Again he is firing up to make tense or square aspects to the Jupiter/ Pluto / Saturn conjunction in Capricorn towards the end of the month, creating tension between Aries and Capricorn, with Mars square Saturn. Mars has just entered his shadow period today at 15 degrees of Aries, working his way up to his station retrograde on 9th/10th September, being in and out of squaring Saturn for about 6 weeks.
The first Mars (go) Saturn (stop) square is exact at August 23/24th (depending on where you live), at 26 degrees of Aries and Capricorn, and will be ongoing until early October 2020. There will be frustration in getting things going, so some of us who are more impulsive and impatient to get things done will feel tested and tried. Coronavirus lockdowns may again occur as they did when Mars was moving over the conjunction of Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto back in March, echoing that theme. Things will move slowly and take longer, there will be delays, so have patience and be cautious in making progress. Remember “God’s delay is not his denial.” Trust that things are going at a snail’s pace for a reason.
If you have personal planets (Sun/Moon/Mercury/Venus/Mars) or important angles (Ascendant/Descendant/Midheaven/IC) in late Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) you will feel the tension building most.
