Mars in Aries 28 June 2020 – 7 Jan 2021 – boldly go after what you want

31/05/2020

Mars, the fiery “warrior planet” ruling assertion, action, aggression, passion, will, drive, competition, independence, daring, and being pioneering, entrepreneurial and courageous, will enter his home sign of Aries on 28 June 2020 until 7 January 2021. He will reside there for over 6 months due to his Retrograde motion from 10 September until 14 November 2020.

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and coincides with the Vernal Equinox, signifying the start of Autumn (or Spring in the Northern Hemisphere). Aries is a Cardinal sign. The Cardinal modality signifies the changes of the seasons. Cardinal energy is initiatory; they are action-oriented starters and like to, “get new things going.” Aries is one of the signs which is also associated with the Fire element concerning inspiration, optimism, energy and animation. Some keywords for Aries include: initiative, enthusiasm, spontaneous, impulsive, self-motivated, independent, direct, self-oriented, competitive and headstrong.

Mars Retrograde

A Retrograde planet is an optical illusion. The planet is appearing to go backwards in the sky from our point of view on Earth. When a planet prepares to change direction, its effect intensifies. Frustrations run high as Mars’ outward energy slows down and gears grind to a halt for the two months between 10 September and 14 November 2020 when he retrogrades from 28° to 15° Aries. Mars enters its shadow period on 26 July 2020, so to use the energy best, get moving on your projects from 26 June until this time.

When Mars is Retrograde, it is a time to reflect on our former actions and possibly re-align our efforts to direct our energy towards things we need to pay attention to or activities not yet finalised. We can start planning projects, or finish off past projects. It is best to wait until Mars is moving direct again before initiating anything new.

You might also feel as though things slow down, plans become frustrated, stalled or stopped altogether, that nothing moves in the right direction, or that you’ve been in a holding pattern; reassessing your actions and working out your next move over the Retrograde period. Mars’ energy is therefore turned inwards – it is difficult for him to direct his energy forwards and outwards at this time.

The energy will intensify and shift again when Mars stations direct on 14 November 2020, and the focus moves towards independently forging ahead in a speedy fashion through putting effort into new plans.

Mars enters Taurus 7 January 2021

When Mars moves into Taurus from 7 January 2021, slowing down the pace, he will however soon thereafter move to conjunct Uranus at 6° on 20 January 2021. Uranus in Taurus has been generally shaking up our values and financial systems, and the way we use land. When Mars conjuncts Uranus, there can be sudden and unexpected separations, impulsive reactions and wanting freedom and independence to do our own thing. Destabilising and unpredictable actions can disrupt, sever and revolutionise any areas of resistance in our lives, offering liberation and breakthroughs from the breaking down of existing conditions.

However, before the conjunction with Uranus on 20 January 2021, Mars tensely squares off with Saturn in Aquarius on 12 January 2021.

Saturn is a social planet (along with Jupiter). He rules tradition, structure, order, boundaries, borders, hard work, duty, rules and regulations, discipline, governments, authority figures, the status quo, responsibility, status, restrictions, denial, barriers and limitations. He is the Lord of Time, the reality check, and he does his work slowly so we can learn lessons and mature. He is slow, steady and cautious, even fearful.

Aquarius is a Fixed Air sign. It is associated with community, the collective, friendship, groups and individuals in society freely exchanging ideas and opinions. It corresponds with humanitarian interests, equality and fairness between all human beings, and can be unconventional and even eccentric. Social links, networks, our mental functions and intellectualism are part of its Airy nature while rigidity of ideas can lead to it being inflexible in its ideals (Fixed modality). It is the sign which allows us to stand back and examine things objectively from a detached stance.

At a broad level, we need to be responsible as we change society in a more progressive manner, finding our freedom while following the rules and offering original and unique intellectual viewpoints and solutions to current issues.

Mars squaring Saturn emphasises where we need to mobilise (Mars = ‘go’), while realising there may be obstacles or walls standing in our way, blocking our path (Saturn = ‘stop’). We could feel angry, frustrated and disappointed that things aren’t going as fast as we’d like; just remember to stay patient and disciplined for the long haul.

Mars only goes retrograde once every 2 years, the next time being 30 October 2022 at 25° in the Mutable Air sign of Gemini, moving back to 9° Gemini before again moving direct on 1 January 2023.

Those of us with the Sun in Aries (born between 21 March and 20 April) or Aries Rising (or Ascendant) will feel this transit most due to Mars’ rulership as ruling planet (of Aries) and chart ruler (planetary ruler of the rising sign).
