Solar Eclipse in Cancer 12/13 July 2018 – New beginnings for home and family

The New Moon and partial Solar Eclipse this month occurs at 12.47pm on 13 July 2018 (Sydney time – AEST) at 20 degrees and 41 minutes of the sign of Cancer. (In New York it occurs on 12 July 2018 at 10.47pm and in London on 13 July at 3.47am).

Solar eclipses are an intensified New Moon so feelings and emotions may be heightened around this time, especially since Cancer is a Water sign, which is ruled by the Moon. Eclipses can be in effect for up to six months – until the next eclipse season in January 2019 (there are two seasons per year). This eclipse will be further intensified as it exactly opposes powerful Pluto at precisely the same degree (known as being ‘partile’), with Pluto at 20 degrees of Capricorn.

Eclipses are like ‘wildcards.’ If there is something in the unconscious (Moon), which needs to come into consciousness (Sun) for you, then it will during this eclipse season, as the shadow of the Moon temporarily blocks the light of the Sun.

Cancer is the sign associated with the archetype of the Divine Mother, so concerns mothering, nurturing, caring, protection and emotional sensitivity. There may be new beginnings with your mother, in the home and family life generally, or involve your heritage and traditional roots. However with Pluto’s connection, we may be subject to another’s emotions – even manipulation, ruthlessness and oppression. Pluto rules transformation, death, rebirth, regeneration and power struggles, which could be covertly manoeuvred. So, new beginnings may come with an ending involved.

This is the first time an eclipse has occurred in Cancer since July 2011 so is a preview of what may unfold in your life as eclipses fall closer to the nodal axis across the Cancer-Capricorn axis from 2019. The nodes are currently across the Leo-Aquarius axis.

Where does the eclipse fall in your chart? Anyone with personal planets in particular (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars) or angles (especially the 1st or Ascendant/Descendant or 7th houses and the 4th/10th houses) will be most affected. If you birthday falls on this eclipse date or 3 days either side you may have a significant new beginning in your life in the coming year.

The next Full Moon is a potentially volatile total Lunar Eclipse on either 27 or 28 July 2018, depending on where you live.
