The Astrology of December 2020 – New freedom for humanity

Eclipse season! This is the second of two this year (The first one being in June/ July), with December beginning on the back of a Full Moon and Partial Lunar Eclipse at 8°38′ Gemini on 30 November 2020.

Eclipses are intensified New or Full Moons, where feelings and emotions run high, and issues lying dormant in the subconscious illuminate the area(s) of life where the eclipse falls. Lunar Eclipses and Full Moons bring things to fruition, and are a time of revelation, completion and endings. Set your intention to release and to purge what which is not serving you. However, this is a North Node eclipse, where we are also being encouraged to grow our curiosity, and to be more communicative, social, rational and adaptable. Anyone born with personal planets, angles and points at around 4 to 14 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini / Virgo / Sagittarius / Pisces) will be most affected.

Mercury moves into Sagittarius on the 2nd of the month, where it isn’t so happy – being in the sign of its Detriment. Our thoughts may be influenced by our future vision and beliefs, and we could be talking impulsively and enthusiastically.

There is a New Moon and Total Solar Eclipse in Sagittarius on 14th (or 15th) December 2020 at 23°08′, this time on the South Node so the new beginning is connected with the past, and is an ending. Where this falls in your chart, (see below), set a new intention for what you want to manifest over the new emotional cycle ahead. This is the only Total Solar Eclipse this year, so use this ‘wildcard’ energy to your advantage for a new beginning. People born with personal planets and angles or points at around 18 to 28 degrees of the Mutable signs (Gemini / Virgo / Sagittarius / Pisces) will be affected the most.

The 14th is also the date when the US Electoral College electors will meet and vote, confirming the 46th president of the United States. The Solar Eclipse also falls on Donald Trump’s natal Moon at 21° of Sagittarius. Trump was born at the time of a Lunar Eclipse, therefore this Solar Eclipse will also oppose his natal Sun at 22° Gemini. There could therefore be a major new beginning in Trump’s life, which involves the law, justice and the truth, and which may involve his children, since the eclipse falls in his 5th house.

The eclipse ruler is Jupiter, which is finalising his year long stay in Capricorn, where global air travel has been restricted, as has the cruise industry. The brakes have been firmly applied to international movement, and whether this situation can recover quickly is unlikely, given the South Node currently moving through Sagittarius for around another year. Our destiny lies more in the direction of local travel (Gemini North Node), rather than the past expansive, wide-ranging activity.

Venus too enters Sagittarius on the 15th of the month, where pleasurable adventures can conflict with our close relationships. To be in harmony with another, we will need to be free to explore, to express broad-minded values and to relate based on our beliefs and philosophies.

Saturn will enter Aquarius on 17 December 2020, finally leaving Earthy Capricorn, where he will reside for around 2.5 years. Jupiter moves into Aquarius as well on the 19th for around a year (apart from a brief sojourn into Pisces from 13 May 2020 until 29 July 2021).

Importantly, the above social planets – Jupiter and Saturn – both moving into the Air sign of humanitarian Aquarius on the Summer Solstice (21 December) will also make a once in 20 year ‘Grand Conjunction’ at 0°. This conjunction in the Air element hasn’t occurred since the period of 1186-1405. Air rules the intellect and the rational mind. Social transformations in this element for the next 200 or so years will see advances in inventions, innovations, artificial intelligence, futuristic technology, and possibly a faster new means of space travel. Writing, thought, learning, knowledge and education will too see a new beginning as we grow and become more connected through technology. Our reliance on Earthy means and metals like coal, and gas and oil will diminish.

The old top-down or vertical power order (Capricorn) is being broken down and replaced with a more equal or horizontal one (Aquarius). We are in changing times; collectively breaking with authority and tradition, liberating and awakening to new reforms in society which are nonconformist and unconventional. This will come to the fore as Saturn (traditional ruler of Aquarius) will square off with the modern ruler of Aquarius, Uranus, throughout 2021.

We end the month with a Full Moon in Cancer on 29 December 2020 at 8°53′. Those of us with personal planets and important angles between 3 to 13 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries /  Cancer / Libra / Capricorn) will feel this most strongly, and, again,  where there could be an ending in your life around home or worldly ambition.

What house (area of life) does the Sagittarius New Moon / Total Solar Eclipse fall in in your chart:
