The New Moon and Partial Solar Eclipse in Virgo falls on either 21/22 September 2025, depending on where in the world you live. It is partial from 5:40am AEST on Monday 22 September 2025, and falls at the final degree of the sign of Virgo, at 29 degrees and 5 minutes.
What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse is a super-charged New Moon; where there is a conjunction of the Sun and the Moon, occuring when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, covering part of the Sun. This conjunction occurs near one of the Moon Nodes, making it an eclipse. This eclipse occurs near the South Node, which is a point of letting go, and release.
The ‘anaretic’ degree
The 29th degree of any zodiac sign is known as the ‘anaretic’ degree, and also denotes a karmic completion, before the planet transitions to the next sign. While the New Moon is planting a seed at the commencement of this new cycle, the anaretic degree, together with the south node indicates this new beginning comes with a resolution of some kind. We can have a turning point in the themes in our lives that have been developing since the last solar eclipse on 29 March 2025.
The sign of Virgo
The sign of Virgo is the symbol of the Virgin or Maiden. Virgo is one of the signs (along with Taurus and Capricorn) which is also associated with the Earth element concerning stability, predictability, groundedness and practicality. Virgo has a Mutable quality or mode (along with Gemini, Sagittarius and Pisces). The Mutable modality signifies the end of the seasons, when the weather is more in flux before we meet the Equinox and the Sun moves into Libra. Mutable energy represents flexibility, adaptability, versatility and changeability.
Virgo is associated with being analytical, discriminating, orderly, effectively using information, and being quite focussed on sorting the “wheat from the chaff”. It relates to developing the skills and techniques of a talent or craft in providing a valuable service. However there may be fussiness, perfectionism and being meticulous and overly concerned with the details with this sign.
Eclipse opposite Saturn-Neptune conjunction
This Eclipse also falls opposite the Saturn-Neptune conjunction (which will be exact at 0 degrees of Aries on 21 February 2026). We may feel hemmed in by routine and order (Virgo), limited by structure, even walls (Saturn), whilst Neptune is asking us to surrender, dream and have faith in our intuition, imagining a more authentic life. The real versus the ideal. Order versus chaos.
Having a reality check around what needs discernment (Virgo) regarding what you have outgrown in your life – and needs to be walked away from, and what is of practical utility that needs to stay. We can work on this for the next few months as we lead into the exact Saturn-Neptune conjunction, heralding another new beginning at the first degree of the zodiac.
