In the wake of the release of some of the Epstein Files on 30 January 2026, and looking forward to some arrests of other male perpetrators, I started thinking about the sociopathy (Antisocial Personality Disorder) condition. When we think of sociopaths (or even psychopaths), this disordered type generally conjures up ideas of male serial killers such as Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, Harold Shipman, and here in Australia, Ivan Milat. Females aren’t commonly thought of as being sociopaths, and especially not females born into immense wealth, luxury and privilege.
Women also rarely commit sexual offences against minors, and make up approximately 5% of these cases. These types of abusers are also generally poorly educated and of low socio-economic status. It is also rare that these crimes are reported, and that the offender is arrested and subsequently prosecuted. Female perpetrators often act with a male conspirator, such as Ghislaine did with Epstein.
Please note, I am speculating about Ghislaine’s condition, not diagnosing her.
The recent Netflix documentary ”Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich” featured stories from survivors of sex-trafficking of children by Ghislaine and partner in crime paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. Whilst it was shocking, it struck me how easy it was for her to locate, groom and manipulate vulnerable girls with a promise of a better life, and for them to earn a little money for, ‘giving Jeffrey a massage.’ She recruited, groomed and abused victims who were under 18 years of age.
Background
Ghislaine Maxwell, born Christmas Day 1961 in France, was the ninth and youngest child of British publishing tycoon Robert Maxwell, owner of the UK newspaper, the Daily Mirror. Three days after she was born, her brother Michael, who was 15 years old, was in a car accident and spent the following seven years in a coma before passing away. Ghislaine was apparently emotionally neglected due to her parents’ grief. However, despite her becoming the ‘favourite’ after apparently telling her mother Betty at 3 years of age that she existed, she was not spared her plutocrat father’s verbal and physical abuse and rage. As a result, she did her best to please her father. (I would say it was ‘fawning’ – a trauma response).
Ghislaine was educated at Oxford University and earned a Masters degree in Modern History with Languages. Afterwards, her father set her up in her own company supplying corporate gifts, and she became a partying socialite. When her father obtained the New York Daily News in early 1991, she went to New York, and commenced enjoying her social life in Manhattan.
Later in 1991 however, her father was on a boat (the Lady Ghislaine) off the Canary Islands, and vanished from its deck. His body was later found floating nearby in the Atlantic Ocean. While officially ruled an accidental drowning, there has been speculation surrounding murder or even suicide. Ghislaine was apparently devastated and inconsolable at her father’s death, and believed he was murdered.
It was subsequently discovered that Robert Maxwell had taken the Mirror Group’s pension fund of £440m ($583m) in order to artificially inflate the company’s share price. His employees, totalling 32,000 people were not happy to say the least. The government chipped in to bail them out. Two of Ghislaine’s brothers, Ian and Kevin were also involved. They were arrested and charged with fraud (and subsequently acquitted). After this time, and with Ghislaine losing a lot of her opulent lifestyle due to her father’s death, she went to New York permanently, working for a Madison Avenue Real Estate company.
She met the wealthy Epstein sometime in the early nineties, and they were photographed together in 1992. Their relationship lasted at least until Epstein was incarcerated (and I use the term lightly as he was on day-release most of the time) in 2008. Ghislaine was a girlfriend, an assistant, a ‘best friend’, and recruiter of under-age females for Epstein to sexually assault. She apparently threatened to physically harm the girls if they did not do what she ordered, as instructed by Epstein. She also directly participated in the assaults. She was also well-connected, including being connected with ex-Prince Andrew, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Clinton, Kevin Spacey and Donald Trump. Famously, Virginia Roberts Giuffre was sex-trafficked by Epstein and Maxwell to then Prince Andrew.
Traits of a sociopath
Ghislaine has some of the traits of a sociopath. She has no empathy, no conscience, a lack of guilt. She is superficially charming, impulsive, self-interested, manipulative, deceptive, and does not care about the rights and wrongs in relation to others. She has no social conscience either, there is no learning from her mistakes. Her needs and wants are considered superior to those of her victims.
When the Epstein scandal broke again in 2019, the first time being in 2005, many of the victims came forward. On 2 July 2020, Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in New Hampshire by the FBI. The prosecution in their indictment argued that the procurement tactics she used were to befriend the girls and take an interest in them. She paid for their travel, their education, and took them shopping. She also normalised Epstein’s behaviour, talking about sex, undressing in front of the victims, and was present and joined in on the abuse. She took no responsibility for her actions during the trial, and tried to raise the defence of coercion (by Epstein). It did not work, she was pleasing Epstein like she did her father. On 28 June 2022, Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in jail, being found guilty of enticing minors, sex-trafficking children and of perjury. She was also fined $750,000, with the judge stating her crimes were, ‘heinous and predatory.’
When people have power and wealth, and are used to having everything they want catered for as an overly spoiled child, they can feel they are entitled to have anything and everything they want and desire without consequences. Their every whim is catered for as a child which follows into adulthood, and people with less money are considered ‘peasant.’ The power corrupts people.
While the ‘apple didn’t fall far from the tree’ with Ghislaine, interestingly, like Robert Maxwell, Epstein, who also came from a poor background and became wealthy, was disgraced and died of a supposed suicide in murky circumstances.
